The Weeknd decided he wants to surprise his fans with new music, rather than make them wait for it. The 28-year-old singer just released a new six-song EP My Dear Melancholy out of blue, his first release since 2016’s Starboy. Out of the six songs, two feature French DJ Gesaffelstein.

The EP was produced by The Weeknd and Frank Dukes, with contributions from Cirkut DaHeala, Gesaffelstein Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Marz, Mike Will Made It, and Skrillex.

The Weeknd first teased new music on March 27, 2018, via Instagram, posting a screenshot of a conversation that said: “should we drop Friday? I’m indifferent, to be honest.”

Finally, for all of those who don’t follow The Weeknd on Instagram, there was a big billboard in London to let them know a new album is out.

After receiving Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Starboy, The Weeknd embarked on a series of collaborations, appearing on Future’s sixth studio album while also being featured on Lana Del Rey’s “Lust for Life” and French Montana’s “A Lie”. Most recently he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther soundtrack album.
