The Weeknd has given us so many cinematic videos throughout his career that it was just a matter of time before he turned to acting—and that moment is finally here. The Canadian superstar is currently plotting a new HBO drama series with the Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.

The Weeknd is expected to star in, write, and executive produce The Idol, the intriguing drama series set to center on “a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.”

Levinson co-created the series with The Weeknd and his producing partner Reza Fahim. In addition to being known for his work on the teen drama series Euphoria, he also recently directed the movie Malcolm & Marie, starring Zendaya and John David Washington.

The Idol will be The Weeknd’s first major acting role, but it’s not his acting debut. He previously starred in the Safdie brothers’ critically acclaimed drama Uncut Gems alongside Adam Sandler, where he played a fictionalized version of himself.
