“The Wire” Star Michael K. Williams Dies at 54

Michael K. Williams, who gave us unforgettable performances in several hit HBO shows, has passed away at the age of 54. Tributes poured in from many of his co-stars and collaborators who worked alongside the five-time Emmy-nominated actor for the past three decades.

Williams made a name for himself with the roles in several hit HBO shows, including The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and Lovecraft Country. The network released an official statement following his death, saying they’re devastated to learn of the passing of a crucial member of the HBO family for more than 20 years.

“While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss,” reads the official statement by HBO.

Williams was found at his Brooklyn home and his family asked for “privacy while grieving this insurmountable loss.” Many Hollywood stars celebrated his legacy with their touching tributes on social media, including Ava DuVernay, Spike Lee, James Gunn, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Damson Idris.

Williams became a household name with the role of Omar Little on The Wire, and went on to receive five Emmy nominations for his work on Bessie, The Night Of, Vice, When They See Us, and Lovecraft Country. His film credits include 12 Years a Slave, The Road, The Gambler, Assassin’s Creed, Ghostbusters, and Motherless Brooklyn.
