The Black Film Critics Circle named their best films and performances of 2022 and The Woman King came on top. The action epic led by Viola Davis picked up the award for best film, in addition to winning several more major accolades.
In addition to being named best film, Gina Prince-Bythewood won the award for directing the film, while the film’s cast picked up the trophy for best ensemble. Davis lost the best actress award to Danielle Deadwyler’s Till, but she walked away with one of the ceremony’s honorary accolades: the Pioneer Award.
The Woman King also made it to the Black Film Critics Circle’s list of the top ten movies, together with the likes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Nope, Avatar: The Way of Water, Till, and Top Gun: Maverick.
BFCC co-president Mike Sargent described 2022 as a banner year for films by and starring people of color and showed the world that their stories matter.
“The fact that we have films from multiple countries in multiple genres and their success has amplified a significant shift that actors like Sidney Poitier broke the doors open for many decades ago,” said Sargent in a statement.
