Country music is generally considered male-dominated. That is why seeing the current situation where three songs by female artists on the top 10 list of the country radio airplay chart is both a surprising and happy event. It was true both in the Billboard and Mediabase charts.

On Mediabase, “More Hearts Than Mine” by Ingrid Andress reached number 7 and “I hope” by Gabby Barrett reached number 8. Number 9 was taken by Maren Morris’ “The Bones” on its way down from consecutive weeks on number 1.

This cluster of female singers’ songs has not been seen since February 2013 when Taylor Swift reached number 1 with “Begin Again,” Carrie Underwood reached number 6 with “Two Black Cadillacs” and Kacey Musgraves was at number 10 with “Merry Go Round.”

On a panel that was held at last month’s Country Radio Seminar, some label executives and programmers were predicting that 2020 will be a good year for female country singers. The Genre took a lot of heat in recent years for its underrepresentation of women compared to past days when they enjoyed bigger attention.
