Tim Burton gave us one of the late 80s classics with Beetlejuice, and its long-awaited sequel is just around the corner. The acclaimed director discussed Beetlejuice 2 in a recent interview and said that the movie was 99% done before the production was shut down due to Hollywood strikes.

The Independent recently published an interview with Burton, where he discussed several future projects including Beetlejuice 2. This sequel allowed him to go back to his roots, and he said they only have about a day and a half of filming left after the SAG-AFTRA strike is over.

“On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it. I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies… I feel grateful we got what we got,” explained Burton.

Beetlejuice 2 serves as the sequel to Burton’s 1988 cult classic about the obnoxious spirit Beetlejuice, who’s been hired by the ghosts of a dead couple to scare away an annoying family living in their old home. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara will return to their respective roles from the first film, with Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux joining them.
