Tina Turner, one of the most iconic performers of her generation, died at the age of 83. The undisputed queen of rock ‘n’ roll leaves a remarkable legacy behind, and tributes from her peers poured in after her representatives announced the tragic news.

According to the official statement by her spokesperson, Turner died after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. She leaves an incomparable legacy behind, after winning 12 Grammy Awards, selling over 100 million records, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—as a member of Ike & Tina Turner and as a solo act.

Just six weeks before her passing, Turner reflected on her legacy in The Guardians’ Q&A column. She said that she wants to be remembered as the Queen of Rock’n’Roll and as a woman who showed other women that it is OK to strive for success on their own terms.

Many pop culture icons paid homage to Turner following her passing. The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger described her as “inspiring, warm, funny and generous”, Elton John hailed her as a “total legend on record and on stage”, while Oprah Winfrey said that she “was a role model not only for me but for the world.”
