Anyone who has ever watched a show by Amy Sherman-Palladino knows one thing for sure — the characters speak really fast. Like, had-way-too-much-coffee fast. Just ask Lorelai Gilmore. And, in most cases, it is a skill that even seasoned professionals must acquire.

Tony Shalhoub, who stars on Sherman-Palladino’s latest show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, has said that his biggest challenge on the show is the speed at which the characters converse. “You don’t have a lot of time for psychology and reflection. You just go. It was a bit of a learning curve to get up to that speed.”

Sounds tough, right? Well, that’s only half of it.

“And also, it’s not just speaking at that pace, it’s a way of listening at a high speed if that makes sense. You have to really keep up and focus on what’s coming at you,” the three-time Emmy award winner says.

Tony has a chance to claim a 4th Emmy win as he has been nominated for the show’s portrayal of Abe Weissman. If he does win, we’re almost certain he’ll finish his acceptance speech before the music begins to play.
