Issa López took True Detective to new heights during its latest season, and she’s coming back for another ride! HBO renewed the hit anthology series for its fifth season after López agreed to return as showrunner and signed an overall deal with the network.
The fourth season of the hit series, titled True Detective: Night Country took us to Ennis, Alaska, where two troubled detectives (Jodie Foster and Kali Reis) must face the truths buried under the eternal ice after a group of researchers working at the Tsalal Arctic Station winds up dead.
Renewing this series for another season was a no-brainer for HBO after Night Country became its most-watched installment, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. They’re also expanding their collaboration with the showrunner Issa López, who’ll create new content for HBO and Max under the new overall deal.
Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming, praised López for making Night Country a massive success and added they’re so lucky to have her as part of the HBO family.
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera,” said Orsi in a statement.
