The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is currently filming in Poland and another amazing star is set to join its cast. The Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis joined the prequel of the successful dystopian franchise as one of the film’s main villains.

Davis will portray Head Gamemaker Volumnia Gaul, described as fearsome and formidable by the director Francis Lawrence. She’s the game’s most commanding figure and plays an instrumental role in helping young Coriolanus Snow develop his savvy as a political operator, which eventually leads to him becoming the tyrannical President of Panem in later years.

Producer Nina Jacobson said that Davis was their dream Dr. Gaul from the very start because of the finely layered intelligence and emotion she brings to every role.

“A brilliant and eccentric strategist, Gaul is instrumental in shaping a young Coriolanus Snow into the man he will become. We are incredibly fortunate to have an actor with Viola’s extraordinary range and presence to play this pivotal role,” said Jacobson in a statement.

The ensemble cast of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is led by Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler, and it also includes Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, and Peter Dinklage. Its world premiere is set for November 17, 2023.
