The first trailer for the biographical drama Joe Bell starring Mark Wahlberg has been released and it’s a tearjerker.

The film tells the true story of a father who honors his late son who took his own life after dealing with bullying at school by embarking on a cross-country walk. The first trailer shows Wahlberg walking down a country road with his son Jadin (Reid Miller) and the two are laughing while singing Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”

Later in the trailer, we see Jaden being harassed at school and when his dad asks him why he’s being bullied he says it’s because he’s gay. Before Joe can come to terms with his son’s sexuality, it’s too late. He decides to honor his late son by walking around the U.S. until he reaches New York City.

The film was written by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry (Brokeback Mountain) and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men). Rounding out the cast are Connie Britton and Gary Sinise.

Joe Bell is scheduled for a July 23 release. Check out the trailer below.
