“You” Writer Teases What Could Happen in a Possible Third Season

Penn Badgley in "You"

Netflix has not yet renewed You for another season, but it’s surely only a matter of time.

Why are we so convinced that Joe Goldberg will return? Well, did you see that final scene?! Despite waiting for the official green light from the streaming service, the team behind the thriller has perfectly poised the show for a third season.

Before the credits rolled on the final episode of season 2, Joe seemed to be in a good place: moving into a suburban home with his pregnant girlfriend, Love, who possesses enough dark secrets to rival Joe’s own. All was well. Until Penn Badgley’s character began to obsess over the neighbour he’s been watching through the fence… some guys just can’t help themselves.

Executive producer and writer, Sera Gamble, feels as though that scene is a reminder of who Joe truly is — in spite of the changes he underwent during the last 10 episodes.

“I think to me, the most important thing about that last scene is just it is confirmation that Joe is still Joe in a way that’s not going to be great for Joe. That he has not learned that he cannot just keep looking for the next person to attach his hopes and dreams to that way,” Gamble said. “It seems clear that he’s falling into some version of that same pattern. I can’t say that we know exactly what a season three would be, but I can say things won’t go well for Joe.”

As for a renewal? Gamble simply says, “Our fingers are crossed that we get to keep telling the story.”
