The Joker is getting groomed for his return to the big screen.

It was confirmed in May last year that a sequel to 2019’s Joker was in development. Despite the film originally being envisioned as a standalone, the movie’s box office success and Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning performance led to reconsideration.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4, 2024, with the first photo from the flick now being released. The image was posted by director Todd Phillips and depicts Phoenix’s titular character receiving a close shave by someone off-screen.

“Day 1. Our boy,” the caption reads.

In addition to The Sisters Brothers star, Zazie Beetz is also expected to reprise her role as Sophie Dumond. They will be joined by Lady Gaga who will star as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist who falls in love with the Joker and becomes his sidekick Harley Quinn. The film is set to be a musical.

Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey have also been cast in roles that have yet to be disclosed. Gleason recently told Extra that the reason he joined the project was because of Phoenix’s “indelible” performance.
