Zendaya and John David Washington are two of the world’s biggest stars right now, and it was just a matter of time before they joined forces. That moment is finally here, and they seem like the best on-screen pairing we could possibly ask for in the first trailer for Malcolm & Marie.
According to the official logline, this black and white romantic drama centers on a filmmaker and his girlfriend, whose relationship is tested after their return home from a celebratory movie premiere and are left pondering the strength of their love as unexpected revelations begin to surface.
Malcolm & Marie was shot during lockdown after Zendaya’s current HBO show Euphoria went on hiatus. The actress joined forces with the creator of the show, Sam Levinson, who came up with the concept for this movie in just a few days. They shot the entire film at a private home in California, following COVID-19 safety protocols and quarantine orders.
Shortly after they finished filming, Netflix outbid several major competitors to acquire distribution rights for this project for $30 million. After being released in select theaters later this month, Malcolm & Marie will premiere on the streaming platform on February 5th.
