Rumors about a potential sequel of Chronicle have been swirling around ever since the original movie came out, but it finally seems that things are official. 20th Century Studios is currently plotting a female-led follow-up set in the same world.

John Davis, one of the producers of the original superhero flick, discussed the potential sequel in a recent interview with Forbes. He described Chronicle as “the best return on investment” and said that the next movie will deal with “fake news and real news and cover-ups”.

“More interestingly, it’s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive. These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey,” explained Davis.

Chronicle came out in 2012 and earned $126.6 million against a budget of $12 million. The found-footage sci-fi indie saw Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, and Michael B. Jordan playing three high school seniors whose lives turn upside down after they gain telekinetic powers from an unknown object. The original film was directed by Josh Trank, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll come back after saying he doesn’t want the sequel to happen on several occasions in the past.
