Disney acquired the rights to the cult franchise The Muppets in 2004 and produced two movies and a TV show based on the franchise since. While the movies, 2011’s The Muppets and 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted, were a big hit, the television show aired on ABC was canceled after just one season. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is willing to give it another try. The reports are saying that The Muppets reboot is being developed by Disney for their upcoming streaming service. The project is, however, in early development, since the studio is still searching for a writer to take on the project.

The Muppets originally debuted in 1955 on live-action/puppet television show Sam and Friends, before getting a standalone show titled The Muppet Show, which aired from 1976 to 1981. The show was a huge success and The Muppets characters continued to be featured in various shows and films. In 2015, Disney debuted the new TV show centered on the characters, envisioned as a mockumentary-style series. The show ended up being canceled after 16 episodes, due to unfavorable critics and poor rating.

With this move, Disney is showing that their new streaming service, which is set to launch in 2019, will be full of remakes and reboots. Disney previously announced that they are planning a Monster’s Inc. TV series, and reboots of The Mighty Ducks and a High School Musical. The subscribers will also have an opportunity to enjoy in live-action Star Wars TV series and new projects related to Marvel comics.
