Suicide Squad 2 Still “Big Priority” for Warner Bros.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie in "Suicide Squad"

Just because we didn’t hear anything about Suicide Squad 2 lately, that doesn’t mean Warner Bros. cares less about the movie. According to Joel Kinnaman, who played Rick Flag in the original, the studio still considers Suicide Squad 2 a “big priority”.

“I just know that they are working intensely on it.” said Kinnaman recently when asked about the sequel. “I know it’s a big priority at Warner Bros., but it’s an equally big priority to get it right. We all felt that we had lightning in a bottle, in a way, and it partly got away from us, a little bit. It’s really important to harness everything that was great about it, and then fix what didn’t really work. So, I know they’re working on it, and we’ll see. I’m very excited to read something, but I don’t have any new information.”

Ok, at least we know that there is something happening. In another recent interview, Kinnaman revealed that Suicide Squad 2 should have less extreme characters than the original.

“I think the characters are so extreme, so I think it could be more effective if we were seeing them with maybe less sorcery.” he said. “I think that the characters become more extreme if you see them in conjunction with more real people.”

The latest we got from Warner Bros. was that Gavin O’Connor (Miracle, Warrior, The Accountant) has been hired as a director and writer for the sequel in September 2017. Prior to that, Jared Leto confirmed he will return as a Joker in the movie. Although Suicide Squad 2 is still short of an exact release date, it is expected that we could see the movie in theaters in 2019.
