According to the film’s official synopsis, Garfield: The Movie will center on the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, who’s about to have a wild outdoor adventure after an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father: scruffy street cat Vic.

In addition to Chris Pratt as Garfield, the voice cast of this project will also include Samuel L. Jackson as his father Vic, Harvey Guillén as the dim-witted puppy Odie, along with Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang.

The Garfield Movie will be directed by Mark Dindal and it will reunite him with David Reynolds, following their collaborations on The Emperor’s New Groove and Chicken Little. Reynolds co-wrote the script alongside Paul A. Kaplan and Mark Torgove.

The Garfield Movie was in development for years, but it finally started taking shape in 2021, when Chris Pratt was cast in the titular role. It will be released by Sony Pictures on May 24, 2024.

Illumination Studios founder and CEO Chris Meledandri also curbed criticisms during a recent appearance at the CineEurope convention. He said that “the criticism will evaporate” when people hear Chris Pratt’s performance.

The sassy orange cat has been around since 1976 when he first made his comic strip appearance. Garfield became so popular that in 2002 it received the Guinness World Record for the most syndicated comic strip.

Television series, movies, and even a full-length musical featuring the character have all followed, though it was announced in 2016 that a new CG-animated film was in the works. Despite a few hiccups that delayed production, Chris Pratt was confirmed as the voice of Garfield in November last year.

The Guardians of the Galaxy actor is now set to be joined by a fellow Marvel alum. Jackson will lend his iconic tone to a character created especially for the new flick—Garfield’s father, Vic.

Pratt is no stranger to voice work. He played the lead in The Lego Movie series and Pixar’s Onward and has recently been cast as Super Mario in the upcoming animated movie about the beloved video game character. He’s currently attached to several more non-animated movies, including Jurassic World: Dominion and Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The film is only set for release at the end of next year, but it has already bagged quite an impressive cast.

Chris Pratt will lend his voice to the titular Italian plumber who finds himself having to fight off baddies in the Mushroom Kingdom. Charlie Day from Horrible Bosses will join the Avengers star as Mario’s brother Luigi as the pair try to save Princess Peach who will be voiced by The Queen’s Gambit star, Anya Taylor-Joy.

Every superhero movie needs a supervillain, and so Jack Black will play Bowser, while Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Sebastian Maniscalco will also feature. 

The games begin on December 21, 2022.

The show will follow James Reece (Pratt) after his platoon of Navy SEALs is ambushed during a high-stakes mission. Reese then returns home to his family with questions about his culpability and conflicting memories of the event. But, when new evidence is brought forward, Reece discovers forces working against him that are endangering his life and his loved ones.

Amazon reported that the series values the experiences and perspectives of U.S. veterans. Half the writing staff are veterans or have veterans in their families. The production plans to have veterans and their families in many aspects of the series.

Pratt and Fuqua worked together in 2016’s The Magnificant Seven where Fuqua directed and Pratt starred. This will be Pratt’s return to TV as his early roles were in Everwood and Parks and Recreation. Pratt’s film roles include the franchise films Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurrasic World. Most recently he was in Avengers: Endgame.
