Grey’s Anatomy has given us 20 amazing seasons so far—and there’s more where that came from! The hit ABC series will extend its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama in TV history after being renewed for Season 21.

Grey’s Anatomy will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, and ABC is marking the occasion in style! They renewed the show for another season, and its creator Shonda Rhimes thanked the fans who supported it through the years, saying their loyalty and love have propelled this series into a historic 21st season.

Meg Marinis also deserves the credit for keeping Grey’s Anatomy alive and kicking after taking over as showrunner from Krista Vernoff in Season 20. She had to face many obstacles, from cutting the episode count to ten after the Hollywood strikes to reinviting the show as an ensemble series after the former lead Ellen Pompeo significantly reduced her involvement.

Even before the show was renewed for Season 21, Marinis made it clear she was here to stay for as long as ABC wanted her to.

“I’ve not been informed that this is the last season so I’m going to keep going and telling stories as long as they let me. We still have stories to tell. We receive a tremendous amount of support from the studio and the network and from Shondaland,” she told Deadline ahead of the Season 20 premiere.

Now that the Hollywood strikes are finally over, release dates of many beloved shows are looming on the horizon, and ABC just unveiled its midseason plate. The network announced midseason premiere dates of several hit shows, including Abbott Elementary and Grey’s Anatomy.

The acclaimed Emmy-winning sitcom Abbott Elementary will return on February 7, with a one-hour premiere. The third season of the beloved comedy was initially supposed to kick off production back in May, but those plans were pushed in the face of the labor disputes in Hollywood.

Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoff series Station 19 are both set for the March 14 midseason premiere. Station 19 experienced a major scheduling shift, and it’s moving from 8 PM to 10 PM to make room for the fellow first responder drama 9-1-1. Only one crossover between Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 is planned for the upcoming season.

The list of returning ABC shows this midseason will also include the reality series The Bachelor, set for a two-hour premiere on January 22. It will be followed by a true crime series 20/20 (January 22), The Conners, Not Dead Yet, Judge Steve Harvey (February 7), and the two-hour premiere of American Idol on February 18. Will Trent, The Rookie, and The Good Doctor are all set to return on February 20.

Grey’s Anatomy wouldn’t be the same without its amazing cast and many of the fan favorites officially confirmed they’ll be back next season. After renegotiating their contracts with ABC, numerous longtime cast members announced they’ll return in the landmark 20th season.

Only two remaining original cast members will be back for Season 20: James Pickens Jr., who plays Richard, and Chandra Wilson, who plays Bailey. They’ll be joined by Kevin McKidd (Owen), Kim Raver (Teddy), Camilla Luddington (Jo), and Caterina Scorsone (Amelia), all of whom have been a part of the show’s cast for ten or more seasons.

It was crucial for Grey’s Anatomy to lock its longest-tenured cast members given the major shift the show experienced last season. The series experienced a huge transition in the wake of Ellen Pompeo’s exit, only made worse by the departure of long-time cast member Kelly McCreary and showrunner Krista Vernoff.

Five new cast members—Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and Midori Francis—tried to bridge the gap and usher in a new era for Grey’s Anatomy. ABC is yet to close new deals with the freshman, but they’re all expected to come back.

The show’s 19th season ended its run on May 18, with Ellen Pompeo making a cameo, and the door remains open for her potential on-screen return.

Grey’s Anatomy is one of ABC’s longest-running dramas, and it just reached another major milestone. The doors of Grey Sloan Memorial will stay open for at least one more year after ABC announced they’re renewing the long-running medical drama for its 20th season.

Grey’s Anatomy will extend its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama when it returns, but several changes are underway. Most notably, Meg Marinis will take over as showrunner from Krista Vernoff, who announced she’s stepping down back in January.

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be entrusted to run Grey’s Anatomy for the past six years and Station 19 for the last four. The passion of the dedicated fandoms and the impact that these shows have on hearts and minds cannot be overstated,” said Vernoff at the time.

Another major change coming our way in Season 20 is the absence of Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey, who carried the show on her shoulders for almost two decades. She got her big sendoff in the midseason premiere and is expected to return in the Season 19 finale. Pompeo still serves as one of the show’s executive producers and there’s a chance she could guest star on Season 20.

Grey’s Anatomy has been hit with massive departures in recent years, and another beloved cast member will soon leave the pack. Kelly McCreary announced she’s stepping down from playing Maggie Pierce after nine seasons.

McCreary’s character was Meredith Grey’s half-sister, and she served as the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgeon since the end of Season 10. Nine seasons later, the actress is ready to bid farewell to this series, and her last episode will air on April 13.

McCreary released an emotional statement announcing her departure and said it’s been a tremendous honor to be a part of this show. She thanked Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, and ABC for the opportunity, and the incredible fans for their passionate support.

“To spend nine years exploring a character inside and out, while reaching a global audience with impactful stories, is a rare gift… Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life, and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey,” said McCreary in a statement.

Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy is currently airing on ABC, and McCreary isn’t the only actress we’ll see in a limited capacity. Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey bid her farewell to the fans on February 23, after the actress decided to reduce her involvement in the series.

Grey’s Anatomy is calling a code red.

We’re gearing up for the 19th season of the medical drama, but one key member of staff won’t be as present as usual.

Dr. Meredith Grey—AKA the titular character—will be scrubbing in for only eight of the upcoming season’s more than 20 episodes. It also means that she will not provide the narration for every episode as has been standard since the show’s inception in 2005.

The decision is due to Ellen Pompeo starring in Hulu’s limited series, Orphan, which is based on the true story of Ukranian-born Natalia Grace whose US adoptive parents claimed that she was actually an adult “sociopath” pretending to be a child and trying to con them. It marks Pompeo’s first acting role outside of Grey’s in almost two decades and she will also serve as executive producer on the project.

Although she renewed her Grey’s contract for another year in January, the 52-year-old actress has admitted that she is ready to move on from the role which made her a household name.

Telling Insider in December that she’s “been trying to focus on convincing everybody that [Grey’s Anatomy] should end,” Pompeo said, “I feel like I’m the super naïve one who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?‘ And everyone’s like, ‘Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars.’”

Producers have said that they will keep doing the show as long as she wants to, but perhaps this is the first indication that Dr. Grey plans to hang up her scrubs.

Loyal viewers of Grey’s Anatomy know that it requires a strong heart to be a fan as many beloved characters have left over the years—some more tragically than others.

As one of the original cast members, the departure of Dr. Izzie Stevens felt as painful as some of the procedures which the interns had to perform. More than a decade after hanging up her white coat, Katherine Heigl is now revealing what led to her decision as part of the new book by Lynette Rice titled How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy.

Although several rumors did the rounds, Heigl says that adopting her daughter Nancy Leigh and becoming a mother is what prompted her decision.

“I went on family leave and just got to be a mom, and it changed my whole perspective. It changed my desire to work full-time,” she explained.

Reports claimed that drama behind the scenes had caused then-showrunner Shonda Rhimes to write Izzie out, but the Firefly Lane actress confirmed Rhimes wanted to keep the new parent onboard, yet scheduling conflicts got in the way.

At least Izzie will live on in our hearts.

Only a few days after Kate Walsh announced her return to Grey’s Anatomy, Abigail Spencer is following in her footsteps. She’s set to guest star on Season 18 of the beloved medical drama, reprising the role of Dr. Megan Hunt.

Spencer made her Grey’s Anatomy debut in 2017, when she first played the role of Megan Hunt, the younger sister of Dr. Owen Hunt, who served in the U.S. Army as a trauma surgeon by his side. She appeared in a total of six episodes and made her last appearance during Season 15.

Spencer is a welcomed addition to the cast, especially after several fan favorites, including Jesse Williams, Giacomo Gianniotti, and Greg Germann, announced their departure. She’ll make her first appearance in Season 18 during the season premiere on September 30th, also set to star Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery and Kate Burton as Ellis Grey.

Season 18 is shaping up to be filled with amazing guest star appearances, but that’s not anything new when it comes to Grey’s Anatomy. The last season also featured surprise comebacks of several former stars, including Patrick Dempsey, T.R Knight, Chyler Leigh, and Eric Dane.

Many fan favorites won’t be around when Grey’s Anatomy returns for Season 18, but one of them decided to make a triumphant return. Kate Walsh is gearing up for a comeback, and her character Addison Montgomery will get a multi-episode arc.

Walsh shared the amazing news on the official Twitter page of Grey’s Anatomy, and she can’t wait to reunite with her old gang on the set of Season 18.

“Well, well, well, would you look who it is. That’s right, my loves, Dr. Addison Montgomery is coming back to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and I’m so excited to be home again joining Shonda [Rhimes], Ellen [Pompeo], and the rest of the incredible cast,” the actress said in the video.

Walsh made her Grey’s Anatomy debut during the Season 1 finale when she was introduced as Derek Shepherd’s estranged wife. She went on to become one of the MVPs of the beloved medical drama, and quickly got her own spin-off series. During the third season of Grey’s Anatomy, Rhimes built a new series around her character, titled Private Practice, which saw her moving to LA to start a new chapter in her life. The series became a huge hit and it stayed on the air for six seasons.

Veteran stage, movie, and TV actor Peter Gallagher is adding ABC’s popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to his impressive resume. According to Deadline, Gallagher will join the show’s 18th season in a recurring role and will be part of a major storyline.

Gallagher’s character is named Dr. Alan Hamilton, and he is someone who knew Meredith’s mother Ellis Grey “back in the days.” Hamilton will meet Meredith in the season 18 premiere, but further details remain under wraps.

Kate Burton, who plays the role of Ellis Grey, is reportedly also set to return in the new season for multiple episodes. While Ellis died in season three due to cardiac arrest, Burton reprised the role on multiple occasions in later seasons during flashback sequences. It is unknown how the character will be reintroduced to the show this time, but it will most likely have something to do with the appearance of Dr. Hamilton.

Grey’s Anatomy, which is on air since 2005, received season 18 renewal back in May. The new episodes are set to premiere on September 30th.

Peter Gallagher is best known for his roles in movies like comedy-drama Short Cuts, Sam Mendes’s Academy Award-winning pic American Beauty, and, more recently, romantic comedy Palm Springs. TV audiences, on the other hand, know him best as Sandy Cohen in teen drama The O.C. and Stacey Koons in Californication.
