]]>The casting process for The Superman: Legacy has gone on for months, but only a handful of actors made it to the final stage and tested in front of DC co-chairs Peter Safran and James Gunn. The last casting call reportedly included three actors auditioning in full Superman attire.
Corenswet and Brosnahan were eventually cast in the lead roles, and DC is still looking for a supporting cast, including an actor who would play Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor.
David Corenswet was one of the front-runners for the role since the start of the auditioning process, despite being a relative newcomer in Hollywood. This marks his first major leading role after he starred in Ryan Murphy’s shows The Politician and Hollywood and movies Pearl and Look Both Ways.
Rachel Brosnahan is already a well-established actress, best known for her breakthrough role in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She won a Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG Award for the leading turn in this series, which wrapped up this year after five seasons.

]]>Gunn took to Twitter to announce he’ll be the one in charge of bringing Superman back to the big screen, sharing details behind this project. His film will center on the superhero’s heritage and show him trying to reconcile his Kryptonian past with his human upbringing as Clark Kent on a small farm in Kansas.
Gunn said that he doesn’t take this responsibility lightly, revealing that he was asked to direct a film about Superman years ago, but he didn’t want to accept until he felt he could do him justice.
“Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude… I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey,” he wrote on Twitter.
Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025, as the first film in DC’s “Chapter One, Gods and Monsters”, and it will be followed by The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing.

]]>The superhero got his own film in October, with Dwayne Johnson starring as the titular character. It was a role that The Rock had been attached to for 15 years. Although a spin-off of Shazam!, it was hoped that the movie would be the beginning of a new franchise within the DC Universe.
However, the latest shake-up at DC Studios means a Black Adam sequel has been put on by ice.
James Gunn and Peter Safran were named as joint heads of Warner Brothers at the beginning of November. The decision came about after they had advised David Zaslav, the CEO of the newly-created Warner Bros. Discovery, during his search for a new head of DC Films.
With hopes high for a Black Adam sequel, Johnson released an update that won’t please fans.
“James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling,” the Hobbs & Shaw actor said. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”
The news about Black Adam follows that of Wonder Woman not getting a third film, and Henry Cavill being dropped as Superman after having met with Safran and Gunn in early December.

Gunn took to Twitter to explain a new Superman movie will be included in DC’s future slate, but it won’t include Cavill because it chronicles the earlier parts of Clark Kent’s life.
Even though he won’t be involved in this project, Gunn also claimed they had a great meeting” with Cavill and talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.
This announcement was quickly followed by Cavill’s own statement, saying that his turn to wear the cape has passed, despite announcing his return as Superman back in October, prior to Gunn’s and Safran’s hire.
“This news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes,” wrote the actor on social media.
