Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, who co-created this series for Apple TV+, confirmed the show’s renewal for Season 2 and promised that Sylvia and Will’s relationship will stay strictly platonic in the show’s next chapter.

Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, said they can’t wait for the viewers to see the comedic mayhem that Will and Sylvia will pull off in Season 2, and praised the creative duo that brought these characters to life.

“Since the first episodes of Platonic debuted on Apple TV+, global audiences have been charmed by the hilarious, wildly fun, and relatable friendship that Rose and Seth have brought to life through their charismatic performances,” said Cherniss in a statement.

According to its official logline, this series centers on a platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife, who reconnect after a long rift, but their friendship becomes all-consuming and destabilizes their lives in a hilarious way.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake said they moved quickly to land the rights for this project once it became available after being impressed by the A-list talent involved.

“We love the script and believe strongly in Aziz as both a performer and a director. And when you add in Seth and Keanu – two incredible world-class talents — toplining alongside Aziz, this has the potential to be a very special film for us,” reads Drake’s statement.

The storyline is being kept under wraps, but we’ll probably learn more before Good Fortune starts shooting in LA next month. It will mark Aziz Ansari’s feature film debut, after his previous attempt at directing, Being Mortal starring Bill Murray and Keke Palmer, was canceled by Searchlight back in February.

Reeves and Lionsgate go a way back, and he currently stars in their box office hit John Wick: Chapter 4. As for Rogen, he most recently voiced Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. and we’ll soon get to see him in Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money and Apple TV+ series Platonic.

The film is only set for release at the end of next year, but it has already bagged quite an impressive cast.

Chris Pratt will lend his voice to the titular Italian plumber who finds himself having to fight off baddies in the Mushroom Kingdom. Charlie Day from Horrible Bosses will join the Avengers star as Mario’s brother Luigi as the pair try to save Princess Peach who will be voiced by The Queen’s Gambit star, Anya Taylor-Joy.

Every superhero movie needs a supervillain, and so Jack Black will play Bowser, while Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Sebastian Maniscalco will also feature. 

The games begin on December 21, 2022.

Rogen is currently promoting his latest movie, An American Pickle. Speaking to GamesRadar, the Canadian actor explained why so few comedies are a big hit at the box office these days. According to Rogen, Marvel is partially to blame.

“Something that me and [producing partner] Evan [Goldberg] talk about a lot is how Marvel movies are comedies,” he explained. “Thor: Ragnarok is a comedy. Ant-Man is a comedy at its core. So that’s what’s out there. There are $200 million comedies out there, and so that’s something, as a comedic filmmaker, to be aware of. That is the benchmark that people expect!”

He went on to explain that comedians making a movie need to be wary that Marvel is competition. Audiences are used to high-budget hilarious Marvel features. According to Rogen, this means comedians need to make sure they offer reliability as opposed to a high budget feature.

“What we’re offering is pure comedy and emotion and relatability and nostalgia,” he said. “That’s the trade-off. You don’t get to see the God of Thunder being hilarious, but you get to see something that maybe represents your actual life, and that’s very gratifying in another way.”

I think we probably wanted too much money. Studios, they don’t like giving away money. Weird thing.”

The 2014 big Sony hack revealed an email from producer Judd Apatow to the studio, in which he expresses excitement about making a sequel. “I am so glad we are so close to getting Pineapple Express 2 figured out. I am very excited to make this thing real. We are very inspired creatively on this one. We have hilarious ideas. It is gonna be awesome,” the email said.

As was later revealed, the production asked Sony for a budget of $50 million but the studio agreed only to a $45 million budget. The parties never reached an agreement and the project never took off.

The comedy is set to premiere on August 6 and is based on Simon Rich’s short story Sell Out, which was published in The New Yorker in 2013. An American Pickle is directed by Rogen’s frequent collaborator, Brandon Trost, who also worked on This Is The End, Neighbors, The Interview, and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with Rogen.

Rogen plays Herschel Greenbaum, a Polish ditch digger who immigrates to the U.S. in 1920 to live out his American dream. He starts working at a pickle factory and falls in the brine, emerging a century later in 2020. All of his immediate family members have since passed away, but he’s able to find his great-grandson, Ben, who Rogen also plays. Together they try to relate on family values, music, and culture and Ben helps Herschel adapt to 21st-century culture while Herschel guides Ben through dealing with the death of his parents.

In addition to starring in the film, Rogen is also producing with Evan Goldberg and James Weaver.

Sarah Snook, Sean Whalen, Jorma Taccone, Joanna Adler, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Geoffrey Cantor, David Mattey, Charles Rogers, and Kevin O’Rourke round out the cast.
