Hulu left us with three wild, highly fictional seasons about Catherine the Great’s rise to power in the Russian Empire when they made an unexpected decision to cancel this acclaimed historical satire earlier this year.

]]>Creator Laurie Nunn confirmed that the show is ending in an official statement, and revealed it became clear that the story is nearing its swan song while scripting Season 4.
“During that process, it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end, the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about it. I felt happy for them, and I felt like I’ve said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time.” Nunn told Tudum.
The ending of S-x Education has been on the horizon for quite some time, as its stars move on to other projects. Several supporting cast members left the series ahead of Season 4, Ncuti Gatwa has been cast as the lead in Doctor Who, while Emma Mackey will soon star in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

]]>While doing the press at the BAFTAs, Mackey was asked if she’ll be back in Season 5 of the beloved teen series. She revealed she just finished filming the fourth season, adding that she said goodbye to Maeve and that she doesn’t expect to come back for another season.
Despite her exit, Mackey is very excited about what’s to come and she’s looking forward to watching the show as an audience member.
“It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s… I’m not in it as consistently… We’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen,” Mackey told Radio Times.
Mackey’s career took off when she was cast in S-x Education in 2019, but she doesn’t owe her Rising Star Award to this series alone. She played the titular role in the Emily Brontë biopic last year, and we’ll soon get to see her in Barbie alongside Margot Robbie.

The latest to add their name to the list? Rakhee Thakrar who plays English teacher Emily Sands.
Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, the 38-year-old actress said, “I’m not part of the new series. I can’t really talk about why.”
It’s possible that the reason could be plot-related as Thakrar continued: “But I’m so proud of the show and grateful to have been part of something so important. There is nothing bad about S-x Education.”
In June, Patricia Allison, who starred as Ola, announced that she would not be taking part in the show’s fourth season. Shortly after, Tanya Reynolds, who appeared as Ola’s girlfriend Lily, also revealed that she would not be featuring.
“It’s just the natural progression of these shows – when you have such big ensemble casts and so many characters, I think you have to let a few older characters go to make way for newer ones, which is absolutely the right thing, the way it should happen,” Reynolds told Radio Times.
Simone Ashley already announced in April that she would not be returning as Olivia due to her role in Bridgerton while no official statement has been made as yet about whether Ncuti Gatwa will reprise his role as Eric now that he has been cast as the lead in Doctor Who.
