]]>The group’s fifth studio album Being Funny in a Foreign Language is being released on October 14 by Dirty Hit and Polydor Records. It will feature a total of 11 tracks and the band gave us a taste of things to come by releasing the first single “The Part of the Band”.
The 1975 teased the release of this record through a series of black and white billboards. They featured snippets of the song’s lyrics, starting with, “She was part of the air force / I was part of the band.”
According to Matty Healy’s recent Reddit AMA, it arose from the song “New York”, which he performed while opening a concert for Phoebe Bridgers in 2021.
“I love the song and it didn’t have a bridge… The bridge was written by me. And then became ‘Part of the Band’. ‘New York’ will be finished eventually but is not a song of The 1975,” explained Healy on Reddit.
“The Part of the Band” saw The 1975 join forces with the superstar producer Jack Antonoff, while Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast was credited as a contributing vocalist.

]]>Fans of The 1975 have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of June 1st—a date on which the English band have often chosen to release new music.
And this year did not disappoint.
The date is significant as the band’s name is inspired by the back page of On the Road by Jack Kerouac which was dated “1 June, The 1975”. To mark the occasion this year, black and white posters featuring frontman Matt Healy and the date “7 July” began to appear.
Back in February, the “Frail State of Mind” rockers hinted that new material was on its way by deactivating their social media accounts and changing their official website to a blank white page. The practice has become somewhat of a tradition for The 1975 who erased their entire social media presence before announcing their last three albums.
As expected, the quartet’s Instagram and Twitter accounts both came to life on the first day of June as they confirmed their forthcoming fifth album.
“Your new album. Your new era. Your old friends. The 1975,” the announcement read.
Although no title has been revealed, we have a good feeling that it will be available on July 7.

The 1975 came up with this concept in collaboration with director Ben Ditto and animator Jon Emmony. “Matty [Healy] and I have a shared fascination with the underbelly of internet culture and how that impacts modern life, and we looked to address this from several directions and created an engaging and beautiful piece of filmmaking to contain these messages and their performance in a revolutionary way,” said Ditto in a statement.
During an interview with Zane Lowe, Healy described this song and video as “one of the things [he’s] most proud of”. It serves as the fourth single from Notes on a Conditional Form, after previously released tracks “People”, “Frail State of Mind”, and “Me & You Together Song”.

The monologue about the current climate and ecological crisis has Thunberg saying “we must acknowledge that we do not have the situation under control and that we do not have all the solutions yet” and “to do your best is no longer good enough.”
The track, which opens the new album, marks the launch of a 28-day countdown to the first single, which will premiere a day before they headline Reading Festival, per Rolling Stone.
