22 years is not too late to return to the arena.

More than two decades since Gladiator hit screens and scooped multiple awards, a sequel is in the works.

Ridley Scott helmed the epic which tells the tale of how Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe, goes from a slave to a gladiator to avenge the murder of his family.

Scott has confirmed that a sequel to the Best Picture winner is currently being written.

“I’m already having [the next] Gladiator written now. So when I’ve done with Napoléon, Gladiator will be ready to go,” the director stated.

Crowe is not expected to reprise his role in Gladiator 2, nor is Joaquin Phoenix as Emperor Commodus. Instead, the sequel is reportedly set to follow Commodus’a nephew, Lucius, 20 years after the events in the original film.
