After 2018’s  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a commercial and critical success it’s no surprise that Sony has greenlighted a sequel shortly after.

The first movie made 375 million dollars at the box office and it even won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Some consider it to be the best outing in the web-slinger movie roster.

Now the sequel’s production, which began on June 8th is getting an additional boost with animator Octavio E. Rodriguez joining it. Rodriguez confirmed this move in his twitter account by posting a quick 10 seconds teaser featuring the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 spider symbol, alongside the hashtag #headofstory.

Peter Ramsey, the first movie’s director, reconfirmed the animator’s involvement, tweeting he is “so excited” to see him joining the crew.

Not many details are known of the sequel, but we do know is that it will also center around the character of Miles Morales and that his relationship with Gwen Stacy will play a central role.

Over his long career in animation Rodriguez has worked with various animation studios including Disney, Lucasfilm, and Cartoon Network. Some of his most notable projects are Incredibles 2, Monsters University, and Coco, which all garnered acclaim for their animation style.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set to be released in October 2022.
