If you hated the way Game of Thrones ended, George R.R. Martin is here to rectify that.

The author of A Song of Ice and Fire, on which the series was based, has said that the ending of his new book is “quite different” from the TV show.

Many fans were severely disappointed by the way producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss chose to wrap up the final season. It was felt as though the characters’ actions did not fit with their personalities and that certain plot points that had been hinted at did not materialize.

Martin has been writing the penultimate book in the series, The Winds of Winter, since 2010, with readers waiting impatiently for him to finish. It was due to the author’s writing pace that the HBO series surpassed the novels and decided on the characters’ fates.

In a new post on his website, entitled A Winter Garden, Martin confirmed that his novels are heading in a different direction.

“Some of the things you saw on HBO in GAME OF THRONES you will also see in THE WINDS OF WINTER (though maybe not in quite the same ways)… but much of the rest will be quite different. And really, when you think about it, this was inevitable,” he wrote. “Not all of the characters who survived until the end of GAME OF THRONES will survive until the end of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE, and not all of the characters who died on GAME OF THRONES will die in A SONG OF ICE & FIRE.”

As for the ending?

“You will need to wait until I get there. Some things will be the same. A lot will not,” the author teased.
