After Mattel found enormous success with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, they decided it was time for the American Girl doll line to get the Hollywood treatment. The American Girl movie is officially in the works, with Lindsey Anderson Beer coming on board as writer and producer.

American Girl dolls were launched by Pleasant Company in 1986, which went on to become a subsidiary of Mattel about a decade later. The dolls in this line were sold with accompanying books, and they were meant to provide entertainment and education about different periods in American history.

Mattel Films considered plotting films around several of their properties following the success of Barbie, including Polly Pocket and Barney. They partnered up with Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill Entertainment to bring their American Girl adaptation to life, and Lindsey Anderson Beer (Sierra Burgess is a Loser) is on board to write it.

Beer grew up playing with American Girl dolls and imagining herself living in their world. She’ll get a chance to transform her childhood dream into a reality, and she thanked Mattel Films, Paramount Pictures, and Temple Hill for this amazing opportunity.

“They are historically accurate toys and accessories that feature elaborate and immersive backstories uniquely suited to bring to screen. I am so excited to tell a story that tackles the issues of girlhood in a real and compelling way [and] create the American Girl movie I have wanted to see since childhood,” said Beer in a statement.
