AFI Fest Picks “On the Basis of Sex” For Opening Gala

Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer in "On the Basis of Sex"

On The Basis of Sex is one of the most anticipated films of the Oscar season, and the organizers behind this year’s AFI Fest decided to honor it in a very special way. The tale of the young Ruth Bader Ginsburg is set to premiere during this year’s opening gala.

Director Mimi Leder was head over heels after learning American Film Institute representatives picked her film. AFI alumni explained their decision is particularly meaningful because she was one of the first women ever admitted to the AFI Conservatory.

“My time at the Conservatory was a life-changing experience and informed my creative journey. I am forever grateful. I hope girls and young women, in particular, will see the film and find inspiration to realize their own unlimited potential,” said Leder.

President & CEO of American Film Institute Bob Gazzale explained they wanted to honor On the Basis of Sex because it brings two dual mandates together as one. It’s both a story essential to our times and a triumph for one of the first female directors at the AFI Conservatory.

On the Basis of Sex centers on the young Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who teams up with her husband Marty to bring a groundbreaking case before the US Supreme Court. It stars Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, and it will hit the theaters just in time for Christmas.
