Studio Ghibli Announces New Film

Studio Ghibli is back in business. After almost a decade, the Japanese production studio is set to release a new film next year. Ghibli became world-renowned for movies like Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, the last of which became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history and won the Best Animated Feature at the 2002 Academy Awards.

The last film released by Studio Ghibli was The Wind Rises which premiered in early 2013. The anime was based on the life of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed the Mitsubishi A5M fighter aircraft and was the final film directed by studio creator, Hayao Miyazaki, who announced his retirement in September 2013.

It seems, however, that after 10 years, the filmmaker has had a change of heart.

Miyazaki previously stated how he would like to adapt one of his favorite books, How Do You Live, for the screen and now the project is officially underway. The 1937 novel tells the story of a 15-year-old boy who embarks on a journey of personal discovery following the death of his father. Throughout, he is guided by his uncle, whose advice is communicated to him from a journal.

According to Studio Ghibli’s Twitter account, How Do You Live is scheduled to open in Japan on July 14, 2023.
