]]>Guillermo Del Toro is fresh off the success of his Oscar-winning animated film Pinocchio, and he’s set his eye on several new projects. Shortly after it was announced he was working on the animated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant, it turned out he was planning to bring another great novel to the screen.
Toro’s Frankenstein is in the early stages of development and he’s still working on the script at Netflix. Garfield, Isaac, and Goth are yet to get formal offers, but it’s been reported that Del Toro met with all three and they all expressed interest to star in this project.
Frankenstein is one of Del Toro’s passion projects and he wanted to direct it since he was a child. He’s been plotting this film for years, but was never in the hurry to get it done, telling Digital Spy, “You have one shot in your lifetime at these things and I don’t want to do it the wrong way.”

]]>The Buried Giant is set in a fictional post-Arthurian England, where no one is able to retain long-term memories. It centers on an elderly couple, Axl and Beatrice, who decide to travel to a neighboring village to seek out their long-lost son after dimly recalling he was once a part of their lives.
Del Toro is hot on the heels of the success of Pinocchio and the adaptation of Ishiguro’s novel seemed like a perfect chance to join forces with Netflix again.
“The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel,” said Del Toro in a statement.
In addition to directing The Buried Giant, Del Toro is also coming on board as the producer, and he’ll write the script along with Matilda the Musical scribe Dennis Kelly.
