He dropped some hints about this project while chatting with Deadline at the Cannes Film Festival last year, revealing it would center on a cynical movie critic who used to write reviews for an adult magazine.

The Movie Critic would be set in southern California during the 1970s, and Tarantino described its titular character as “a guy who really lived, but was never really famous”, adding his reviews were “a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might be if he were a film critic.”

Pitt previously collaborated with Tarantino on Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which won him an Academy Award for best supporting actor. He’ll next be seen in Jon Watts’s action thriller Wolfs alongside George Clooney and Joseph Kosinski’s untitled Formula 1 drama.

Diehard Tarantino fans have been wondering, however, whether they would ever get to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in its entirety, the way the filmmaker initially envisioned, and he has now given us an answer. 

“Maybe in a year’s time, we probably will,” he said at a special screening of the film at ArcLight Hollywood. 

Rumor has it that version is over four hours long. Best have a lot of popcorn.

“Audiences have shown tremendous support for this movie, and we look forward to offering them another opportunity to see the film as it’s meant to be seen — in theaters on the big screen — with more sights and sounds of the sixties from Quentin Tarantino as an added treat,” said Adrian Smith, Sony’s president of domestic distribution.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is currently Tarantino’s second-highest grossing movie earning $139 million in North America and $228 million overseas.

Quentin Tarantino and his wife Daniella Pick are expecting their first child together. 

The 56-year-old filmmaker confirmed the news in a statement to PEOPLE. “Daniella and Quentin Tarantino are very delighted to announce that they are expecting a baby.”

The two met back in 2009 when Tarantino was promoting his film Inglorious Bastards. They got engaged in June 2017, after dating for about a year and tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Los Angeles in November 2018.

“If [Once Upon a Time] is really well received, maybe I won’t go to 10,” he told GQ Australia. “Maybe I’ll stop right now! Maybe I’ll stop while I’m ahead. We’ll see. I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road.”

Tarantino’s films up until this point are Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, Grindhouse, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

So what does the 56-year-old intend to do after retiring?

“I see myself writing film books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative. I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies.”

Festival president Thierry Frémaux admitted they were afraid that Tarantino’s latest won’t be ready in time, but the director and his team spent the last four months in the editing room, doing everything in their power to make it work.
