]]>Unlike Rose, Day will not portray the actual Batwoman, because Ryan Wilder played by Javicia Leslie took over the cape from Kate Kane. She’s still excited to play this character and re-join the DC family after starring in SyFy’s Superman-themed series Krypton.
“It’s a huge responsibility stepping into the shoes of a character that’s already been established and it’s a journey I’m looking forward to being a part of and hoping you guys do too,” wrote Wallis Day on Instagram.
In addition to Krypton, Day’s filmography also includes the British soap opera Hollyoaks and drama series The Royals. She’s currently attached to the sci-fi thriller Infinite, also starring Mark Wahlberg, Dylan O’Brien, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, set to come out this fall.

]]>Earlier this year, Rose confirmed that she would not be returning to the show for season two. Months later, she has finally revealed the reason that she decided to leave the show. As it turns out, her exit was a result of pushing herself too hard after her surgery.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Rose said: “Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. Being the lead in anything is tough. But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery.
“I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn’t the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film — regardless if it’s action or if it’s emotional — in whichever ways it’s taxing.”
Rose also shared that starring on the show was a huge accomplishment and that she is “grateful” for everything they achieved.
Nonetheless, Rose made the decision to leave the show in order to take time to fully heal and recover from the intensity of filming during recovery. Although she says she will “return to TV soon,” for now, she is rightly looking after her mental and physical health.

]]>The new lead is named Ryan Wilder and is younger than Kate Kane—she’s in her mid to late 20s. It’s still unclear if Ryan is a new character or a code name for an existing DC character, and Season 2 will show her journey to becoming Batwoman.
The official casting note said, “[Ryan is] likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed” and “nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.” Ryan is a former drug-runner, but now sober living in her van with her plant and she’s a skilled, but undisciplined fighter. Like Kane, she’s an out lesbian, and performers who identify as LGBTQ have been invited to read for the role.
The series premiered last fall and was the first superhero series in television history to feature an LGBTQ character as the main role. Last month Rose revealed that she was exiting the show.

]]>The series will go on, but they’ll be looking to cast a new lead. Rose was the first gay lead character, male or female, of a live-action superhero series. The show is committed to casting another LGBTQ actress in the role.
The reason for the actresses’ exit is unclear, “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” said Rose in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew, and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”
Back in September, Rose had emergency surgery for two herniated discs after sustaining injuries from a stunt she did while filming Season 1. A source told Variety that her decision to leave “had nothing to do with her health or injury.”
Batwoman was renewed by the CW for a second season in January.
