]]>Directed by Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino, Challengers chronicles the rise and fall of the former tennis protégé Tashi (Zendaya). A bright future was ahead of her before an injury derailed her career as a professional tennis player, forcing her to turn to coaching instead.
She poured all her energy into helping her husband Art (Mike Faist) become a Grand Slam champion. Once he finds himself in a rut, Tashi decides to sign him up for a low-level event to gain back his confidence, but it turns out he won’t get an easy win because his former best friend and Tashi’s ex Patrick (Josh O’Connor) is also playing.
R-rated original films usually struggle to make a mark at the box office, but that didn’t stop Challengers from serving up a win with a $15 million opening. In addition to topping the domestic box office, it earned $10 million outside of North America.
Challengers was initially slated for the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year before shifting its release date to April 26, 2024, due to dual strikes in Hollywood.

]]>Dune: Part Two was initially supposed to hit the theaters last fall, but its release date was delayed to March 1, 2024, in the face of Hollywood strikes. This decision paid off big time, and this film ended up grossing $81.5 million domestically plus $97 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $178.5 million.
Dune: Part Two owes a significant part of its earnings to sold-out IMAX showings, which accounted for 23% of domestic sales or $18.5 million. Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, addressed the film’s huge success in this format and said that this number wasn’t higher only because they ran out of seats.
Dune: Part Two is based on Frank Herbert’s seminal epic sci-fi novel of the same name, and Denis Villeneuve is plotting the adaptation of its sequel Dune Messiah. Timothée Chalamet led the star-studded ensemble cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux.

Zendaya’s performance as Rue Bennett has earned her both critical and fan praise, as well as an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Series. With the show having been renewed for a third season, the Dune star, who also serves as executive producer, says she’d like to see what the characters are like outside of high school.
“I want to see what Rue looks like in her sobriety journey, how chaotic that might look,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “But also with all the characters, in the sense where they’re trying to figure out what to do with their lives when high school is over and what kind of people they want to be.”
